Lincoln Heritage Agents: What to Expect From an In-Home Visit

Palmetto Mutual Logo

Lincoln Heritage sells its final expense insurance policies almost entirely through in-home appointments with its own agents. If you returned a mailer or called a number from a TV ad, an agent may be scheduled to sit at your kitchen table within a few days. This guide walks through what that visit looks like from start to finish — how the appointment gets set, what the agent will present, what they will ask you, and what happens at the end. Knowing the shape of the meeting ahead of time makes it easier to listen carefully, ask good questions, and decide on your own timeline.

Why Lincoln Heritage Sends Agents to Your Home

Lincoln Heritage runs a lot of ads. You have probably seen them on daytime TV, or gotten a postcard in the mail asking you to send back a reply card for burial insurance information.

When you respond to one of those ads, you don’t get a price online. Instead, the company sets you up with one of its licensed agents, who then reaches out to schedule a visit.

That visit is usually at your kitchen table. Lincoln Heritage is built around in-person and phone appointments — you cannot buy a policy online or through the mail.

The company says it works this way on purpose. It calls itself an “agent-focused” company and says its agents meet with people face to face so they can walk through the product in person.

One thing worth knowing up front: most Lincoln Heritage agents are “captive.” That means they can only sell Lincoln Heritage policies — not plans from any other company.

So the agent at your table is not comparing Lincoln Heritage against other carriers. They represent one company, and that is the only final expense insurance they can offer you.

None of this makes the visit something to fear. It just helps to know why the meeting happens and what the agent can and cannot do before they arrive.

What Happens During the Visit, Step by Step

Most in-home visits follow a similar path from start to finish. Here is what each part usually looks like, so nothing catches you off guard.

The warm-up and needs conversation

The visit usually starts with friendly small talk. The agent will introduce themselves, sit down with you, and ask a few questions about your situation.

They will want to know things like your age, who you want to protect, and what you would like the money to cover. This part is meant to figure out how much coverage you think you need.

There is nothing wrong with this step. Just remember it is also where the agent begins learning what to recommend, so it is fine to take your time and answer honestly.

The presentation — funeral costs and the Funeral Advantage pitch

Next, the agent will often talk about how much funerals cost today. This sets up the case for why final expense coverage may help your family.

They will then explain the “Funeral Advantage” program, which is Lincoln Heritage’s name for its whole life burial insurance. A key selling point is a free membership in the Funeral Consumer Guardian Society, or FCGS.

The agent may say the FCGS shops around at up to three funeral homes after you pass, and can save your family money on the funeral bill. It is worth knowing that some independent reviewers feel this benefit is minor and note that similar planning forms are available free elsewhere.

The health questions and application

Because there is no medical exam, the agent will ask you a set of health questions instead. Your answers decide which plan you qualify for.

This part is often done right there at your table. In many cases the whole application is filled out and signed in a single visit.

Your answers matter a great deal. Depending on your health, you may be offered immediate coverage, or you may only qualify for a “modified” plan that has a two-to-three-year waiting period before it pays the full amount.

The close

Near the end, the agent will usually ask you to sign that same day. A same-day decision is a normal part of how these visits are run.

In most cases, the first premium is collected at signing to put the policy in force. The policy then takes effect once it is approved and that first payment is made.

You are allowed to say you want to think it over. Signing on the spot is common, but it is not required, and a later section of this guide covers what to do if you would rather wait.

Common Sales Tactics to Watch For

Most Lincoln Heritage agents are professional and polite. But it helps to know the common sales moves used in final expense insurance visits, so you can stay calm and think clearly. Knowing them ahead of time is not about distrust — it is about being prepared.

Urgency framing

One of the most common tactics is a sense of “act now.” An agent may say your rate will go up on your next birthday, so you should lock in today.

There is a grain of truth here: with age-based pricing, waiting can mean a higher rate later. But this is also a standard closing line used across the industry to push a same-day decision.

You are allowed to take a day or two to think. A rate that is fair today will still be fair after you have compared it to other options.

Monthly-price-only quotes

Agents are often trained to quote you a monthly price and watch your reaction. One common script offers a few monthly amounts — like $30, $60, or $90 — to find the number that feels comfortable.

The problem is that a low monthly number can hide the real long-term cost. Ask for the yearly total, and multiply it out over 10 or 20 years to see the full picture.

The table below shows why the monthly number alone can be misleading.

What you’re toldWhat to ask instead
“It’s just $45 a month”“What is that per year?”
A single monthly figure“What will I pay over 10 years? Over 20?”
“That fits your budget”“How does this compare to other companies?”

FCGS positioned as irreplaceable

The agent will likely highlight the free Funeral Consumer Guardian Society (FCGS) membership as something special you can only get with Lincoln Heritage.

It is a real benefit. But independent reviewers point out that similar funeral planning forms and price-shopping help are available for free from other sources. Our related guide covers whether you can get this kind of help elsewhere.

So it is fair to ask the agent: what exactly does the FCGS do, and is this truly the only way to get it?

The one-company blind spot

This is the most important one to understand. Because most Lincoln Heritage agents are captive, they can only show you Lincoln Heritage prices.

That means no matter how the visit goes, you will never see a competitor’s quote at that kitchen table. The agent is not hiding anything — they simply cannot sell another company’s plan.

An independent agent, by contrast, can pull quotes from several burial insurance carriers at once. Our guide on comparison shopping walks through how that works.

Questions to Ask the Agent Before You Sign

You do not need to be an insurance expert to protect yourself. You just need a short list of clear questions. Ask these before you sign anything, and write down the answers.

The checklist below covers the key points. A good agent will answer all of them plainly and in writing.

Question to askWhy it matters
Is this the immediate plan or the modified plan? The modified plan has a two-to-three-year wait before it pays the full amount. You want to know which one you’re getting.
What is my exact monthly and yearly premium?A monthly figure alone hides the long-term cost. Get the annual number and the total over time.
What happens if I die in the first year?On a modified plan, your family may only get your premiums back plus a little interest — not the full benefit — during the waiting period. Our page on the first-year payout explains this.
How long is my free-look period? This is a short window after signing when you can cancel for a full refund. Confirm the exact number of days in writing.
Can I see the health questions first?Your answers decide which plan you qualify for. Ask to read them before you commit.

Getting these answers in writing gives you something to review calmly later. If an agent is reluctant to put any of it in writing, that itself is worth noting.

Remember, funeral insurance is a long-term commitment. A few minutes of clear questions now can save your family from surprises later.

You Don’t Have to Decide on the Spot

Here is something many people do not realize: you are never required to sign during the visit. The agent may ask for a same-day decision, but the choice of when to decide is yours.

You have the right to end the meeting politely at any time. A simple “I’d like some time to think this over” is enough, and a professional agent will respect it.

You can also ask to keep any printed materials the agent brought. Having the plan details in hand lets you review everything calmly after they leave.

Most importantly, you can compare. Because most Lincoln Heritage agents can only show you their own prices, taking time to get quotes from other burial insurance companies is the only way to know if you are getting a fair deal.

There is no penalty for waiting a day or two. A good policy will still be there tomorrow, and comparing options often reveals lower prices for similar coverage.

Already signed and regretting it?

Do not panic — most new life insurance policies come with a “free look” period, a short window after you receive the policy when you can cancel for a full refund. This window is often 10 to 30 days, and many states give seniors buying final expense coverage the longer end of that range, so act quickly and check your policy documents for the exact deadline. Our guide on canceling a policy covers the exact steps.

Can You Get a Quote Without a Home Visit?

This is one of the most common questions people ask, and the answer has two parts. With Lincoln Heritage specifically, getting a true price without talking to an agent is difficult.

Their website looks like you can see quotes online, but if you fill out the forms, you will not actually see prices. Instead, an agent is sent to deliver the quote in person or by phone.

You can sometimes complete the process by phone rather than at your home, since Lincoln Heritage allows applications by phone or in person. But either way, you are going through a captive agent who can only quote Lincoln Heritage.

There is another path. An independent agency works with many carriers at once, so it can pull quotes from several final expense insurance companies and compare them side by side.

That comparison is where the value is. Independent reviewers repeatedly find that shopping multiple carriers can uncover the same or better coverage for less — sometimes 25% to 100% less than a single-company quote.

So yes, you can avoid a home visit — but the bigger win is seeing more than one company’s price before you decide. Our guide on comparison shopping walks through how to do that.
